ROAD WORK IN AVONDALE.
INQUIRY BY THE COUNCIL. COMMITTEE REPORT REJECTED. Tho cost of work done in Wynyard Road was the subject of inquiry at a special meeting of tho Avondale Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Tait, presided. The Mayor explained that the meeting was called to clear up the discrepancy between the cost (£803) of tho work as shown by the council's books, and the figure (£57-1) reached by a committee appointed to investigate the matter. The idea was to examine the data from which tho committee compiled its report and compare it with the of/ice records. Questioned by the Mayor, tho borough engineer, Mr. J. J. Riley, explained that in most instances the time-sheets were filled in by the men themselves, collected by the ganger on the job, and if correct passed on to the foreman. The material sheets were filled in from the motordrivers' tally. No further inquiry was possible as no member of the committee which framed the report fixing the cost at £574 was present, nor had any figures or statement been forwarded to substantiate the report. It was therefore unanimously decided to reject the unsupported report of the committee. .
