Wells, Master of Wadham College, in his annual Latin speech, described " Oxford bags" as more barbarous than any garb the Dacians or the Sarmatians wore. The professor also criticised the practice of undergraduates of both sexes of sipping coffee by the hour in cafes, although, he admitted, the men drank less wine and beer than formerly.
