NEWMARKET BOROUGH.
| THE FINANCIAL POSITION i INCREASE IN EXPENDITURE, 3 I r i The Newmarket Borough Co and! mot r last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson. presiding. The treasurer's half-yearly report was r ! submitted. The estimate of expenditure : j for the year in excess of the original csti- - 1 mates was £1029, and of revenue £46, I | leaving an unfavourable excess of £983. ■ 1 This was fairly substantial, and although j the resources of the council had in the j past proved equal to meeting more serious ! problems it would probably bo found I necessary to proceed very carefully during , ! tho remainder of the year. The increase | in expenditure was partly due to the fact ! that tho council had decided to dispose of I | the debentures in connection with a street • | loan at an earlier date than was expected, i i This made a difference of £3OO in interest. 1 | The remainder of the excess was ac- £ J counted for by miscellaneous items, as 7 I follow:—Supreme Court action, £185; . | traffic control in Broadway, £150; enterj | taining American I'M (Hit, £23; Dunedin • | Exhibition, £3O; erection of clock, £75. | In connection with street loan No. 5 the ' report stated it would be necessary to take . advantage of the Act permitting the raising of an extra 10 per cent. Provided due j care was taken to avoid further comrniti merits during the remainder of the year, , j the council, would have little fault to find 5 with the position at March 31. J It was decided to accept a tender by • j Mr. W. Coltman of £349 for the supply I and erection of one clock for the front of | the municipal building and four for the | interior. . s I The turncock reported that an appoint- . j mont had been made with the city water- . | works superintendent to discuss the ext | cessivc amount of water shown in the j account for August. ! The engineer reported that preliminary ! plans for the Victoria Crescent overbridgo j were completed, and that detailed estiI mates would be available for tho next I meeting of the Streets Committee. I A letter was received from the suporin- • | fendent of police, Auckland, stating that., J i the seaman's strike and the necessity for | having every available man on duty at, the waterfront had prevented the commencement of 1 raffle control in Broadway, but as soon as men were available the points would be manned. It was decided In grant the Education Board permission k> erect a temporary I wood and iron shed for a store on the old ! Newmarket school site. ' It was decided to grant the sanitary i inspector leave to attend the conference of the. Sanitary Inspectors' Association to ; be held in .Dunedin in February. ' It was decided to appoint the Mayor as > delegate to the conference of the Muni- ' cipal Association to be held in Dunedin in December. ' • '
