SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT.
> — BUS-DRIVER PROSECUTED, DISMISSAL OF THE CASE. An accident in which a motor-bus, bound from Ellerslie to the city, crashed into the premises of Messrs. Hynes and Menzies, plumbers, Manukau Road, Parneli, on the morning of July .30, had a sequel in the. Police Court yesterday, when the driver, Leonard Hat taw a\ (Air. White), was charged with negligent driving. Defendant said he had been driving for years, and this was his first accident. He was proceeding down Manukau Road past St. Stephen's Avenue on the tramlines and when near Hynes and Menzies he turned in nearer the footpath to enable traffic to pass from behind. When he tried to straighten out the bus again it would not answer the wheel and jumped the. footpath. He was certain something went wrong with the steering gear. Passengers said the bus was not travelling at an excessive speed at the time of the accident. Cecil Bland, assistant traffic inspector, said he examined the steering gear and brakes after the accident and found them in good order. Mr. White contended that the steering gear was defective, thus causing the accident. Thft magistrate, Mr. Hunt, who said the evidence against defendant was not strong enough for a conviction, dismissed the case.
