r A I n " Cheerio," No. 2, issued by the National Council of the Licensed Trade iin September, there appeared a statement alleged to have been made by Colonel W. L. Butler, Head of the Salvation Army, Northern Division (U.5.A..),, to the effect that as a result of Prohibition girls of 14 and 15 were now being admitted to the Army's Rescue Homes. The Salvation Army Commissioner in New Zealand calbled to the U.S.A. concerning- this, and received back replies stating (a) that there was no such person as Colonel W. L. Butler in the American Salvation Army, and (b) that Colonel Barker, Head of the Northern Division, " Positively denies having said such a thing." REDRESS REFUSED The Editor of M Cheerio " was interviewed, the cables shown to him., and requested to correct the false statement. He alleged triat he had taken it l'rom ari American newspaper—but did not produce the paper—and that he would bring the matter before his Committee. After full time to permit of consideration, the S.A. Commissioner enquired whether a withdrawal or correction was to be made, and was informed that neither the Editor of "Cheerio" nor the National Council of the Licensed Trade proposed to take any action. The refusal is a thing so contemptible as to be almost beyond belief, but it is a FACT. A STRIKING EXAMPLE This is a striking example of the Liquor Traffic's methods. Its hoardings, literature and advertisements teem with half-truths, misrepresentations, fakes and fictions that it knows New Zealand readers cannot check. It is imposible to exnose them piece by piece as they appear. It publishes as facts what are deliberate and scandalous lies, and hopes, by publishing thera often enough, to mislead the public in regard to Prohibition in the U.S.A. WHAT THE SALVATION ARMY KNOWS Commander Evangeline Booth, head of the Salvation Array in the U.S.A., says: " Need bcfotten through drink is practically wiped out, whereas, formerly it was one of the most prolific causes of poverty. Our Relief Department and Labour Bureau contribute the same evidence, and EVERY PHASE of Salvation Army activity unites in extolling the Prohibition Law as beneficent; in its results."
