QUARRY ON MOUNTAIN.
BOROUGH AND DEPARTMENT. REQUEST TO BE RENEWED. The continued operations of the Railway Department at the scoria quarry on Mount Albert was commented upon at the meeting of tho Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, the opinion being expressed that the defacement, of the mountain should cease. The Minister for Railways, Mr. Ooates, in reply to a letter from the council asking when operations on the ballast-pit would stop, wrote stating it had been arranged that the jagged faces of the cone left, as a result of the department's operations, should be evened off, and that future operations would not further affect the appearance. To close the quarry at Mount Albert definitely would result in very considerable financial loss to the department, but i.-ari Jul inquires were being made to ascertain whether it was possible to arrange lor a supply of metal that would reduce the department's losses to a. minimum if it was found ieasible to eli>sc tiir, quarry. Members slated the reply was not a direct or adequate answer to the request made by '<he council, ft- was decided to forward another letter asking when the department was going to close the quarry definitely.
