BURNED TO DEATH.
OLD MAN'S TERRIBLE FATE. POWERLESS EYE-WITNESSES. Helpless to interfere, horrified friends were forced to stand by and watch while an old man was roasted to death at Allendale, 11 miles from Cessuock, in the Newcastle district, New South Wales, on September 26. Francois Ryan, aged 70, an old age pensioner, who lived in a hut, w3iS the victim of the fire. Occupants of a small house some hundreds of yards from the hut noticed that it was afire late on Saturday afternoon. They rushed over at once, but though they could see that the old man was apparently asleep in- his bed, the flames were by that time so fierce that it was impossible to go to his assistance. No water supply was available in the vicinity, so thai, they were forced to stand by and watch him burn. The cottage, or humpy, in which Ryan lived was made of ironbark, and it was two hours after the fire was first noticed that the police were able to approach and remove the old man's charred remains from the debris. The coroner, at an inquest, returned an open verdict, as there was no evidence to show how the fire started.
