[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Government candidate for Lyttelton, Mr. M. IS. Lyons, opening his campaign at Sumner, declared himself a strong supporter of Mr. Coates' Ministry, though not a blind supporter of Mr. Coates' programme. He declared he favoured Labour receiving just as large a share of the value created as an industry could pay consistent with the adequate reward of the other instruments of production, but said the Labour leaders were throwing away the substance for the shadow, as was evidenced by their failure to give wise advice to the British seamen on strike. He advocated measures to prevent unemployment and welcomed the relief suggested by Mr. Coates for basic wage workers with large families. He urged a cessation of borrowing for unreproductive purposes, a progressive policy for the settlement of land left available and further subdivision of areas suited to intensive farming. He was accorded a vote of thanks.
