AUCKLAND WEST SEAT.

ADDRESS BY MR. OLDFIELD. Mr. S. Oldfield, official Reform candidate for Auckland West, addressed a wellattended meeting of supporters in the Leys Institute last night. Mr. J. A. C. Allurn presided. The candidate strongly criticised the policy of the Labour Party, and particularly the attitude of its leaders in connection with the shipping strike. In emphasising the work done by the Reform Government, Mr. Oldfield stated that, as in the days when labour organisations brought better conditions to oppressed workers, so to-day the Reform Government, under Mr. Coates, would prove the antidote in this country to revolutionary socialism, which was opposed to the best interests of the workers. Dealing effectively with the question of production, he pointed out that shorter hours and less output could not bring about more work or prosperity. Idleness was not creative. State enterprise could not compete with private activities, nor were they economically successful. He favoured the freehold tenure, not the socalled "usehold." Occupancy and use were wide terms that had not been fully explained Mr. Oldfield was warmly applauded at the conclusion of an address, that was followed with great interest. Strong committees hae been formed in various parts of the district.
