ESCAPE OF LEOPARD.

MUCH CONCERN CAUSED.

CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION,

NO FURTHER ACTION TA^EH-

There vras no reference in tho reports submitted to the City Council last evening to the escape of the female leopard from the Zoo and this f&ci was mentioned by Mr. T. Bioodworth, who said the freedom of the animal was causing much concern to many people. He thought therft should be some information as to bow the animal got away, and of the steps being taken to recapture it. The Mayor, Mr, G. Baildon, remarked that it was not known how the animal got out, otherwise the council would ba only too pleased to supply the information.

Mr. M. J. Coyle said that many people in certain districts were unea~y about tha continued freedom of the and thought the council was not doing any* thing to catch it. He had told tht:«a that men had gone over the country thoroughly in the search, but this did not satisfy thern. The Mayor then read a report by the curator of the Zoo, Mr. L. T. Orilfen, who said the animal had not been seen in the enclosure since Monday, September 14. It did not seem possible that the animal had escaped by getting through the bars of the cage and he mentioned that the female leopard formerly accommodated there was considered to be rather smaller than the animal which escaped. He was of opinion that the spoor found at Jagger's tannery was that of the escaped animal and said that any reports of a trustworthy nature as to the leopard being seen were at once thorough ;y investigated. No further action was taken by the council, but Mr, Bioodworth asked that a ; return be furnished showing the number I of animals that had died or been losfe since the inception of the Zoo.
