TWO SMUGGLERS CAUGHT.
LARGE SEIZURE OF DIAMONDS GEMS HIDDEN IN CANDY. f FROM OV'R OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SAN FRANCISCO, Sept, fl. An interested party stated the other day that soft goods to the value of £5,000,000 were smuggled annually from the United States into Canada. It is officially known that large quantities of merchandise are secretly taken across the border and the authorities have to resort to clever devices to trace offenders. It is now revealed that a carpet cleaner and a •beak-keeper endeavoured to smuggle 000 worth of diamonds into Canada acroiss the linn from the State of New York.
In one of the trunks special agents found two boxes of candy which, when opened, yielded diamonds of various size concealed between layers of chocolatecovered nuts and candied fruits. Gems valued at £BOOO were found in the frame of a shoe-brush. It is one of the largest seizures of diamonds in recent years, but the authorities are by no means certain that they have secured the whole "bag."
