RESERVED FOR LADIES.

MANAGER ORDERED OUT.

EPISODE ON THE RAILWAY.

COMPLAINT AGAINST INSPECTOR.

[By TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WANGANTTI, Tuesday.

Tho male manager of the Manawatu ladies' hockey team on tour found that there are certain aspects not provided for when travelling with ladies on tho railway, and at a meeting of the Hockey Association last evening he dramatically announced, "I was nearly accommodated in gaol because of you." He had evidently had trouble with a ticket inspector. He made a statement that he was in a carriage reserved for the team when suddenly a man rushed at him and in no uncertain tones told him to "get out.'' He was astounded at the request, particularly as it crane from a ticket inspector, and did not move from his seat. The official then grabbed him and took him out to the platform, yelling, "Can't you read ?" and with an angry gesture pointed to a sign which indicated that the carriage was for "ladies only." Ho attempted to explain that, so far as he was concerned, the carriage was reserved, and was so marked, for the team. The inspector, however, would not listen, so he went back to deliver the tickets to his charges.

Another scene ensued when he was distributing the tickets. The inspector mad© a grab for them, but the manager forestalled hint, and shouted, "You leave them alone until'"l have given all of them out, and then you can have the lot." With that he proceeded with the work. "I had to stand from Marton to Hawera because the seat I had been in was taken at Marton," added the manager, who then proceeded to express indignation at the treatment meted out to him.

A general discussion followed, the result of, which is that the secretary is to maks> inquiries into the matter and report to the headquarters of the Railway Department at Wellington.
