CLEANER CITY DESIRED.
CAMPAIGN IN SYDNEY. . A WAR AGAINST LITTER. [FROM OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY. Sept. 10. At an early hour in the morning Sydney, from one end of the city to the other, is almost spotlessly clean. Then tho armies that dwell in suburbia begin to pour into the city. They litter it with:' tram tickets and papers, tho peelings of fruit, which they have not had time to eat at breakfast or in the trams and ferries, and other debris. Then comes the wind to blow everything about. Others como along during the morning to completo the good work, until the city wears a dirty and bedraggled appearance before the day is out. Receptacles are specially provided throughout tho city for the disposal of tram tickets and other papers and refuse, but they aro invariably passed by. With the co-operation it is hoped of the citizens a fortnight's " clean the city" campaign is to be launched by the City Council. To scatter tram tickets and other refuse about is an offence against the by-laws. But rather than prosecut-e offenders the council proposes to appeal to • tho good sense of citizens, and to any sense of civic pride that they possess, to help in keeping the city clean.
It is proposed to distribute leaflets pointing out that indifference in these matters is actually an 'offence in tho eyes of the civic laws. As a matter of fact, tho council itself will be committing a breach of its own by-laws in distributing these leaflets. But it has been agreed that in tho cause of city cleanliness the by-laws against the distribution of leaflets might be overlooked on this occasion.
