RELIGION IN SCHOOLS.
AUCKLAND INSTITUTION. :■ ' WORKING OF NELSON SYSTEM: " :■ Some particulars of religious instruction giv?n in schools under the control of the Auckland Education Board were given at a meeting of the board yesterday. • A letter was received from the Education Department stating that the House of Representatives had issued an order for a return regarding the Nelson system of religious instruction in schools. The department asked for a report of the number and names of schools in which ■ the system is in operation, and the approximate number of pupils receiving instruction in each school. The secretary reported that communications had been sent out to the schools concerned, and. replies had been received. At Rotorua, approximately 600 primary school pupils and 80 secondary pupils we*e receiving instruction. There were 493 and 86 names on the respective rolls. At the present time there was a shortage of instructors and the instruction had been discontinued temporarily. At Thames the associated ministers were at present makirig a canvass of the town with a view to introducing the sysem. At Opotiki approximately 200 children were receiving instruction.
