NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. PLAY IN THE FIRST ROUND. LACOSTE'S MILITARY DUTIES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 11.45 p.m.) Reuter-A. and N.Z. VANCOUVER. Sept. 14. Lacoste, the French player who is competing in tho American national tennis championships at Forest Hills, received a cablegram ordering him to sail for Franco on Wednesday for compulsory military training. American tennis officials appealed to the Acting Secretary for War to intercede with the French Embassy at Washington so that Lacosto could finish his play in the national championship. Subsequently Lacoste was given permission to remain in America for a week, the French War Office granting the extension. He will sail for 1* ranee oil September 22. In tho first round of the national singles championship Ancferson (Australia) beat Jones (Providence), 6—l, 6—l, 6-3. Tilden, Johnston, and Williams (America) and Alonzo and Lacosto (France) won their matches in straight sets.
Harada (Japan) beat Kinsey (America) by three sets to one.
