THE CAPE TO CAIRO.
POPULARITY OF ROUTE,
COMPLETING THE RAILWAY-
[from our own correspondent.] CAPETOWN, Augr. 14.
The Capo to Cairo route seems to be becoming one of the grand trunk roads of the world. Not only are several motorcar expeditions traversing it and also one motor-bicycle expedition, but there are innumerable walkers, some of them women, who have blithely set out to tramp through the interior of Africa with Cairo as their objective. Furthermore, it is now announced that the famous British aviator, Alan Cobham, together with the Chief of the Air Service,, General Sir Seffcon Brancker, intend to fly to Cape Town and back from London. This aerial journey was achieved some few years ago by a South African, Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld. It necessitated the use of three machines, but he arrived successfully at Cape Town. The ordinary individual, however, is more inclined to think of this Cape to Cairo route in terms of railway travelling, and the possibilities of travelling the whole journey across Africa by mechanical means seems to be practically possible in these days. It is of great importance to South Africa and the world generally that there should be the. completion of speedy passenger and trade communication through the heart of the African continent. This is not far from being realised, if the recommendations of the East Africa commission are carried out. The Commission proposed an Imperial loan of £10.000,000, guaranteed a$ to principal and interest, for the purpose? of railwav extensions and other development in East Africa, and the proposal appears to be regarded with approval b> the "British Government and a majority of the House of Commons, and only awaits a favourable opportunity of being put into effect.
