ROWERS FOR MELBOURNE.
HAMILTON CREW APPROVED DECISION OF ASSOCIATION. [by telegraph.—-pkess ASSOCIATION. X WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At a meeting of tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association a letter was received from the Melbourne Amateur Regatta Association inviting the council to send a club four from New Zealand to compete in tho race for the Stewards' Challenge Cup. It was stated that crews would be competing from West Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia, and the letter expressed tho hope' that the Dominion would be able to send a crew, toward the expenses of which £IOO would be donated. The secretary said tho Canterbury, Wanganui, and Marlborough Associations could not nominate a crew for selection, but the Auckland Association had nominated the winners of last year's New Zealand four-oared championship® Hamilton. This crew was reported to have been in easy training during the winter, and able to be thoroughly fit at tho time the race would be held, October 24. It was estimated the cost of the trip would be'et least another £IOO. It was decided to advise that the council was willing to nominate the Hamilton crew, and to ask other rowing associations to assist by subscribing toward the cost, the council contributing £2O, the nomination to be subject to the appointment of a manager to be approved by the council. The New South Wales Association wrote regretting its inability to accept the council's invitation to compete at tho New Zealand championship and other regattas in New Zealand during February and March next, and askirg the council's opinion of a visit in 1928. It was agreed that this date should be accepted if possible, but a definite answer could not bo given, pending the decision of the Australian Rowing Council whether New Zealand visits Australia for eight-oared racing in 1927 or 1928. The Otago Rowing Association wrote applying for the championship regatta for the coming season to be held during the currency of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition about next February, and nominating Mr. W. H. Priest for tho office of president. Mr. Halyburton Johnstone, of Auckland, wrote offering to provide a handsome cup for competition in eight-oared rowing, to be rowed for at least once a year, Australia to be allowed to compete. The offer was accepted with thanks, conditions to bo arranged later. The opinion was expressed by several members of the council that the cup would be a fitting trophy for a provincial eightoarcd championship. The council approved of a donation being mado to the Massey memorial fund. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for October 29.
