MAIN HIGHWAYS FUND.

GRANTS FOR CONSTRUCTION. NET TOTAL OF £435,000. THE AUCKLAND PROVINCE. DETAILS OF PROVISION MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. A net appropriation of £435,000 for the construction and improvement of main highways throughout New Zealand is proposed in the Public Works Estimates for the current financial year. Last year the vote was £504,570, but only £225,454 was expended. There are many fres grants but the majority of votes to the districts under the jurisdiction of the Main Highways Board are to be given as subsidies, mostly on the basis of £1 for £l, although in numerous instances the subvention ranges from £2 to £5 for £l. The proportions cannot be published in detail and in each case the total grant to the district concerned only is given. For the Auckland-Wellington main highway, £44,391 is included' in the Taranaki vote, £9820 in the Wanganui vote, and £29,950 in the Wellington West vote. QUARRIES AND SAWMIIA. LARGE VOTES PROPOSED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON., Tuesday. Large amounts are provided in the Public Works Estimates for the development of, quarries at Tauraroa, near Whangarei and Te Wera, near Stratford. The proposed vote for the former is, £30,000 and for the latter £23,000.

For the Donnelly's Crossing sawmill in North Auckland the voto proposed is £i7,000.. , . ; :. ,r,
