AUCKLAND UNION'S AFFAIRS

DECISIONS OF COMMITTEE. THE HAWKE'S BAY MATCH. The management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union met last evening, Mr. H. Frost presiding. It was left to the chairman and secretary I of the committee to select the manager of tho team to play at Te Aroha on Saturday. Messrs. G. Nicholson and C. Anderson wero appointed joint managers of the Auckland team to play Hawke's Bay at Eden Park. The City Mission wrote asking for financial assistance for its bazaar. It was resolved to donate £2 2s. King's Old Boys wrote advising that they would bo unable to continue playing this season. ' The team had been very unlucky owing to injuries to players and they exceedingly regretted their inability to turn out again. The letter was received. A letter from the New Zealand Rugby Union advised that tho reinstatement of H. P. Johnson had been grained. The Waikato Rugby Union wrote requesting a match with the Auckland A team. The committee regretted that it was impossible to' grant this. The North Auckland Rugby Union wrote concerning the ordering orl of an Auckland player in the representative game at Whangarei last 'Saturday. After hearing the releree's evidence the North Auckland Union considered the player had sutlered sufficiently. Tho letter was received and it was resolved that no iurther action bo taken. Mr. G. Nicholson reported on the match at Whangarei and said he was well pleased with tne piay of the Auckland team, particularly oi the forwards. 'lhey bad had a splendid time. A resolution was passed that a letter of thanks be sent to the president of the North Auckland Union expressing gratitude for the hospitality extended. Mr. Aloore. manager of the team that played Waikato last Saturday, also gave a snort report on tho trip. lie commented on the kind treatment to tho team by Mr. W. Christie, and it was resolved that a letter should be sent to that gentleman expressing thS union's thanks. In order to reach finality in the Pollard Cup competition it was resolved that the match committee be instructed to bring down a recommendation. Tho position at present is that three teams, Grammar Old Boys. Grafton and College Rifles have not been defeated. It practically moans that the competition will be confined to these teams. The sole selector, Mr. G. Nicholson, mado a few remarks concerning the team to meet Hawke's Bay on Saturday. Ho said that no effort was being spared to turn out the players as fit as possible. All had been attending practices and he was confident the team would make a good showing. Mr. W. J. Meredith has been appointed refereo for the match. The curtain-raiser will be tho annual game between Mount Albert Grammar School and Hamilton High School, while before this the referees' team will meet tho Kaipara representatives. PRIMARY SCHOOLS RUGBY. The following matches will be played under the auspices of tho Auckland Primary Schools Rugby Union to-morrow:— Seniors.—A Grade: Remuera v. Kowhai A. Domain No. 1. 3.30 p.m.; Beresford Street v. Vermont Street, victoria Park No. 1, 3.30 p.m. Juniors.—Vermont Street v. Bayfield, Victoria Park No. 2, 3.30 p.m.; Remuera v. Meadowbank. Domain No. 2, 3.30 p.m. Outside referees will be appointed for all games In the semi-finals of the public schools championship yesterday Vermont Street defeated Kowhai by 21 points to 3. THE RANFURLY SHIELD. HOLDERS DEFEAT OTAGO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, Wednesday. Otago played Hawke's Bay at Nelson Park to-day in the final challenge of the season for the Ranfurly Shield before an attendance of, 4000. The weather was fine, with a stiff breeze. At half-time Otago were leading by 14 points to 3, but in the second half, with the wind at their backs, Hawke's Bay added 31 points to Otago's nil. The final scores were: Hawke's Bay 34. Otago 14. Otago made good use of the wind in the first spell, but bad passing among the backs lost opportunities. From an infringement Donnelly, who played full back, Hannan taking his placw at threequarterß, put over a good penalty goal. A try for Hawke's Bay wag scorod by Blake, who received the ball from Grenside. Donnelly kicked a goal from a mark by Townsend i .d later Webb scored after some nice handling, Donnelly converting. Webb again scored from another passing ruuh but the kick was a failure. On changing over Hawke's Bay gradually showed their superiority, until eventually the forwards dominated play. Wednesday. Reports that have again gained currency of Nepia going to England shortly under the League have led to a further contradiction by die player. Nepia will represent Hawke's Eay at Westport on September 25 and will also take part in the match at Auckland. BARRY CUP AT WAIROA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WAIROA (H. 8.), Wednesday. In the second Barry Gup challenge mutch of the season, played to-day, Waiioa, the defenders, defeated the East Coast Union representatives by 9 points to 5, after a fast, evenly-contested game. The Wairoa forwards gained the upper hand in the closing stages, pulling the match out of the fire.
