HAMILTON AFFAIRS.
SITE FOR BOROUGH OFFICES. fjJY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton. Friday. The Hamilton Borough Council has deckled to resume two leases of an important block of land at the corner of Victoria and Alma Streets, within easy distance of the railway line, as a site for municipal offices and for future municipal requirements. The whole property is at present leased for £715 a year. From the land not required as the offices sitp it is estimated that a sufficient rental will be obtained to more than pay interest on the whole of the purchase money. The sum of £2250 will bo paid as compensation to the present lessors.
The work of improving the appearance of tho town undertaken by tho Beautifying Society has been making steady progress. The street trees have received attention, poor specimens and dead ones being replaced. More streets have been planted, planes and ash being mainly used. Some' hundreds of hydrangeas have been bedded out at the Memorial Park nursery, and are now ready for planting along the river.
A somewhat ambitious scheme in connection with tho proposal to level Garden Place Hill was suggested by the president of the society, Mr. W. 11. Paul, when interviewed to-day. He thought that the spoil could be utilised on the town bank of the river to form a carriageway some chains in length from Alma Street to Marlborough Place. Even if it was mado only a "one-way" track it would give motorists a better view of tho river.
