[Bt TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHTJRCH, Thurada At a meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society a letter wa3 received from ilbe Kowai County Council asking the society to take steps to have oppossums protected in the county, Tho council regretted that the animals were being destroyed, as there were not many of them.
Mr. W. Deans said tho opossum was of no use to the society and it should not be protected. Ho thought it had been responsible for the disappearance of tho mopoke from the vicinity of Christchurch. Mr. L. A. Shand said the opossum was driving native birds out of tho trees. It lived in hollow trees which previously had been used by tho birds. The secretary stated that members of tho Kowai County Council liked to have opossums about. They wanted to stop two licensed trappers from working in the district. ■
It was decided to write to the council and state that as tho society considered opossums did more harm than good it did not see its way to offer protection.
