NEWMARKET SCHOOL SITE.
USE AS RECREATION AREA. PRICE THOUGHT TOO HIGH. An intimation that tho Education Brfjd proposed at an early date to consider the question of disposal of the old school site at Newmarket was received by the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. In tho meantime tho board desired to know if the council was prepared to make a definite offer for tho whole school site. Tho suggestion contained in a recent communication from the council that the prico might be fixed as between the l>oard and the council at £4OOO was not in the nature of an offer, but tho board wished to intimate that tho sum mentioned would not bo considered adequate. The Legal and Finance Committee reported that it had considered the letter and was of opinion that no good purpose could be served by giving the matter fur ther consideration. Tho board appar ently expected to receive for tho site a sum approximating its present-day commercial value, which was beyond tho re sources of the council, for such a purpose a3 the provision of recreation grounds. In view of theso circumstance? combined with tho fact that tho sito could not be described as the most suitable for the purpose the committee recommended that no further action be taken Tho Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, said that ho personally differed from tho other members of the committee, but apparently he stood alone. The recommendation was adopted.
