A Smith, of Sydney, are at the Grand HoteL . , Major-General C. W. Melvill, Genera! Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces, left for the South by train last evening. Messrs. F. J. and J. O'Neill, of Wanganui, Messrs. J. Gal Jen and A. Gaileri, ' of Sydney, and Mr. M. J. McEvedy, of" Matiere, are at the Royal Hotel. • •• Mr. R. T. McQuade, of New Plymouth, Mr. W. B. Freeman, of Melbourne, Mr. '"' and Mrs. A. F. Wells, of Brisbane, and" Messrs. L. H. Lalione, L. Wilkinson and r D. Wyles, of Wellington, are at the Star Hotel, Mr. G. S. Lynde, chief mechanical enfineer of the Es{ew Zealand Railways, and ■» is assistant, Mr. It. P. Sims, who have been in Auckland on departmental business, left for the South by train last " evening. Mr. H. •J. Otley, chairman of the Christchurch Hospital Board, who has been on a holiday visit to Sydney and • Brisbane, returned by the Maheno yesterday. He was accompanied by Mr/,. Otley and Miss Otley. Commander A. Channor, R.N., retired, ! arrived yesterday by the Maheno frora.v Sydney. He is accompanied by Mr?. Channer, and is on a health trip to New Zealand. He will probably remain a year, spending most of the time at Rotorua. Commander Channer was a lieutenant on the scientific expedition ship H.M.S. Challenger, which called at Wellington about 45 years ago in the course of a -world tour. He also served in the Burma War of 1887. Dr. A. Carlcss, C.8.E., medical director of Dr. Barnado's Homes, was a passenger by the Maheno from Sydney yesterday. Dr. Carlcss, who was formerly senior surgeon at King's College Hospital, London, left England last October. He has visited South Africa and various parts of Australia, and has investigated tho activities of Barnado work. He is on a holiday visit to New Zealand, and will remain here for abont two weeks. While in Sydney he became seriously and was unable to move abont for four months. He is accompanied by Mrs. - Carlcss.
