STRIKE AT ARAPUNI.
DIVERSION TUNNEL WORKERS
WAGES PAID £2 8s A SHIFT* [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUTARURU. Saturday. The men working on the tunnel at Arapuni came out on strike early on Friday morning. This work, which is one of the most important being undertaken at the moment, has for its object the diverting of the Waikato River so that foundations of the dam may be built. The work had been reorganised in a satisfactory manner in this section quite recently, the floods having interrupted operations, and the men working in shifts of six and a-half hours had been earning £2 8s each per shift. It is stated that following a sudden decrease in the output of spoil from the tunnel negotiations were commenced, and though the men's leaders received the proposals favourably, a strike was declared. So far no settlement has been made.
