AMERICAN NAVAL MEN. FIREWORKS FOR THE FLEET. WEEK-END ENTERTAINMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrirht.' (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.SS. SYDNEY, Aug. 2. Tho officers and men of the division of the American Fleet which is visiting Sydney, spent tho week-'end in a aeries of excursions to the pleasuro resorts, and in baseball and other games. A football exhibition match was played between teams from the Idaho and Colorado, and the warships gave a searchlight, display at night. A shooting match between teams from the fleet, the National Rifle Association, tho citizen forces and the Australian Navy was won by the United States team. A message from Melbourne says that 300,000 people lined the esplanade at St. Kilda io witness a special fireworks display in honour of 'the visiting section of the fleet. Features of n magnificent spectacle were a representation of the flagship Seattle in a flashing picture 63ft. long and 30ft. high, a fiery representation of Niagara Falls, a forest fire and a setpiece depicting Australia's welcome to the fleet. Theso formed the greatest display of tho kind in the history of Melbourne. The Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, slates that he has taken steps to inform the American press of the untrue nature of tho canard regarding Australia's welcome to and treatment of the fleet.
