POWDER AND PATCHES.
Sir, —With the criticism of "Hudibras" I have no great quarrel. Did the economic question permit, it would certainly bo more correct and more picturesque also to dress in the costume of the period oi powder and patch. .But. period costuming, unless correctly designed arid artistically carried out in detail, could easily prbvo ridiculous or grotesque. But, as one of the oldest members of the Victoria League, I take grave exception to tha mischievous remarks by "Not Classy." The precedence of tho Victoria League, if precedence there be, lies in the fact that it was that league who made . the primary suggestion that the two leagues should combine forces in giving a Tmll to the admirals and officers of tne fleet. The bfidges surmounting the cards of invitation were superimposed by the printer with the actual rubber stamp used by each league in its everyday work. Any wish, suggestion or complaint of any mem* ber of either league would receive the same patient hearing and be granted, accepted or redresßSd in equal ratio. Pits the proper place to make them either in writing .or in person is at committed meetings. As these social entertainments have na motive except toprcmoto good feeling or good fellowship or a better understanding between the peoples of the two greatest Empires in the world,, it is only common courtesy and common good taste to refrain from wanton criticism which may not only engender ill-feeling between the two bodies, bnt may chance to bo read by our coming guests.
