MAINTENANCE NOT PAID.

THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.

A charge of failing to obey an order for maintenance of his wifo was admitted by Robert William Adams in the Polico Court yesterday, beforo Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. Arrears were stated to amount to £lO6 16s 6d. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was passed. A charge of stealing 5s belonging to Eliza M. Rudall was preferred against William Stanley Brown. On tho ground that accused was not mentally normal mainly through his physical condition, brought about by serious operations, an application was made by Mr. Singer that Brown should bo ordered to como up for sentence when called upon. Tho money was stolen from a house whero accused was installing electric light, Chief-Detective Cummings stated. A complaint was made to tho polico and accused frankly admitted hi 3 guilt. Mr. Singer said the man nad no cause to steal as ho had good employment and had somo money saved. The magistrate warned accused that if he offended again ho would be given threo years' reformative detention. He ordored him to appear for sentence within 12 months.

A young man, Harold Roy Painter, for theft of a motor clock valued at £5, was admitted to probation for two years. A fine of £lO, in default one month's imprisonment, was imposed on Thomas Samuel Hill for the third breach of his prohibition order. Ho was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. When charged with drunkenness in Wakefield Street on Saturday, Mary Ann Fowler, who had three similar convictions within tho last six months, signified her wish to be sent to the Inebriates' Homo at Pakatoa Island. She was discharged on condition that sho went to tho island. Two charges of being idle and disorderly in that ho had insufficient lawful means of support and that ho habitually consorted with reputed thieves, also a further allegation that he procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order t were denied by Donald Taylor, aged 48. At tho request of accused he was remanded until to-morrow.

CASES AT ONEHUNGA. The slippery stato of the road at Mangero was mentioned when William Banks was charged with driving on the footpath. Defendant said tho road was too slippery to drivo on. Tho magistrate imposed a fine of 20s and costs, remarking that this was a similar caso to thoso that had alroady come before him. He suggested that no doubt representations would bo placed before tho council in tho matter. .To Haurangi, who did not appear, was fined on a similar charge. A. W. Drinnan was charged with allowing 14 cattle to wandor into a garden. The cattlo were impounded by tho Mount Roskill ranger. Defendant did not appear and was fined 203 and costs,,
