BAD STRETCH OF ROAD.
THREAT AGAINST COUNCIL.
RESENTED BY LOCAL BODIES
[BY TELEG RAPII.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. The threat levelled at tho Waikato County Council, that unless it undertook the work of improving that portion of the Main South Road within its boundaries, between Taupiri and Ohincwai, immediately tho Main Highways Board would do the work and charge the council with twotliirds of the cost, was mentioned at tho conference of county councils held at Hamilton to-day. The chairman, Mr. G. A. Stanton, roforred to the report of what took place at tho mooting of tho Waikato County Council. He said that tho Highways Board's attitude was ono that should not be tolerated by the counties. It aimed at the wholo structure of county administration. Mr. T. B. Insoll, Waikato. explained that the road was in tho Huntly Riding, which was rated to its maximum limit, but owing to a heavy overdraft was unable to ifind tho funds with which to keep any of its roads in repair, let alone tho main road, which had gone to pieces since Christmas.
Comment was made by Mr. Campbell Johnstone on the influence exerted on the Highways Board by the self-elected Automobile Association.
Another member said that that showed tho advantage of organisation. The local highways councils were over-ridden by tho imam board. It was resolved to recommend to tho board that it should act on tho recommendation of the local councils, which knew tho local conditions and could investigate tho circumstances of cadi case.
