TE PUKE DRAINAGE.
KAITUNA RIVER' OUTLET. GOVERNMENT AID SOUGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORTIESPON OKNT. ] TK PUKE, Saturday. A conference of local body representatives convened by the Te Puke River Ik&rd was held here to-day to consider tho question of seeking Government assistance toward improving the Kaituna River outlet to facilitate the drainage of a large area of swamp land. It was pointed out by several speakers that the position of some of the landowners was desperate and that some remedy was necessary to prevent farmers from having to abandon their holdings. The condition of the swamp, owing to the flooded nature of the Kaituna River, has rradually become very serious. Valuable improvements in draining and grassing have been lost. It was mentioned that several reports from eminent engineers had been obtained at a cost of about £9OO, but no scheme seemed to come within the resources of the RiveV Board. A committee was appointed 1o obtain all possible data and make a further appeal to the Government for a substantial grant. The County Council, Harbour Board, Town Board and Drainage Boards are to be asked to assist in sending a deputation to Wellington.
