C. PURDY V. J. ALLEN. TWENTY ROUNDS BOUT DRAWN* Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 5. At tlje Sydney Stadium last evening 'Charlie Purdy, of Auckland (9st. B^lb.), fought a 20 rounds drawn battle with Jimmy Allen (9st, 6£lb.). Although the contest wias colourless and uninteresting Purdy showed himself to be fast and clever. His punches were unconvincing, however. The crowd on two occasions counted the men out. Against a different style of boxer Purdy would make a much better showing. CONTESTS IN MELBOURNE. At the Melbourne Stadium last evening Ben Martin defeated Dick Congress) on points in a 10 rounds bout. Charlie Pilkington secured the verdict over Bert McCarthy on points in a contest of a similar number of rounds. JACK DEMPBEY IN FORM. EXHIBITIONS AT BRIGHTON. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. The world's champion heavyweight boxer, Jack Dempsey, appeared in exhibition bouts at Brighton. He received deafening applause. The champion bexed Phil Scott and others and showed that he has lost none of his old form. i i
