Her Excellency Lady Alico Fergusson and a party from Government Houso went to tho operetta to celebrato the G.F.S. jubilee in Wellington. E., who is a visitor to Wellington from England on Y.M.C.A. business, is also keen on mountaineering, and is president of the Ladies' Alpine dab. ILM. Queen Margherita of Italy is hon. president, and tho name of Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond, a noted mountaineer, is also on the list. 'A theatrical charity and jazz matinee in aid of the funds for the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is being arranged by a strong committee of ladies under the presidency of Mrs. Devoro ant* the vice-presidency of Mrs. «jcot£o Coates. The matinee will bo on tho samo lines m those which are so popular in JLondon and Paris. Tho next luncheon talk of tho Lyceum Club will be given on Thursday by Mrs. EEaJbot, -when her subject will be, " The iWlxrte Man's Burden.'*" Mrs. Talbot is pn accomplished spsaker, widely read and cultured in style and is treating a subject | that should make a special appeal to all ■women who take an interest in the future fil their Empire. The gramophone is proving a most valuable addition to musical training in many ef tho New Zealand schools. It is in use ut the Wellington Girls' College for pupils' concerts and for tho lessons in musical appreciation conducted by Miss Adelaide ,iVan Staveren. With the help of willing 'pianists and vocalists valuable illustrations have toen given of the works of Lizst, Puccini, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, and ; Schubert. A most enjoyable danco arranged by tho 'Old Girls' Association of St. Cuthbert's i College was held in the new college buildjing, Epsom, on Friday evening, at which Ithere was present a very large assembly 'of young people. The spacious hall made an ideal ballroom, and the wide corridors were also used for dancing, while the various classrooms were arranged »as sit-ting-out rooms. Softly . coloured lights threw into relief the dark panelling of the building and clusters of palms and ferns were arranged with charming effect. Supper was served in the refectory apart from tho main building, and the large airy room looked very delightful with its gaily ■decked tables prottily arranged with yellow jonquils and violets and sprays of asparagus fern. The president of tho Association, Miss Gorton, in a frock of green shot taffeta, with the principal of ■the college, Miss Clouston > in navy blue jgeorgette, received the gusests in the enjtraoce halL 'At the invitation of Miss Stevenson, : general secretary of the Y.W.C.A, repreisentafcives of numerous girls' organisations lof the city were present at tea at the iY.W.C.A. on Wednesday evening. The gathering was arranged to enable the organisations to become more cognisant of each others' aims'an'd work. This was partly achieved through the short speeches given by one of the representatives of each association. Miss Stevenson, in welcoming the guests, explained that it was fitting that the gathering should be held at {ho Y.W.C.A, as tho Y.W.C.A. was a centre for the city. She referred to plans that are being made to build a new girls' hostel for tha city. Tho campaign will be held next year, when it is hoped that all the girls' organisations will taae part.
