POLICE REFUSED REMAND.
QUESTION OF INQUIRIES. COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. An application by Senior-Sergeant Edwards in the Police Court on Saturday to have Percy Rule, aged 24, remanded for a week whilo investigations were made in connection with another matter met with a blunt refusal from Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Rule pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Constable Leslie in the execution of his duty on June 26. Tho senior-sergeant stated that accused went to his sister's home when drunk and behaved in such a manner that Constable Leslie had to be summoned. Accused stood at bay with a spade in his hand and hit the constable on the wrist with it. A week's remand to enable inquiries ;to be made regarding another matter was requested. Mr. Hunt replied that he did not think he would be justified in doing this. "I am not entitled to hold him in custody while you make inquiries. He has already been remanded for a week on the present charge," said Mr. Hunt. Accused was fined £2 and was ordered to pay £1 8s medical expenses, in default seven days' imprisonment.
