THEFT AT RABAUL.

£922 FROM THE TREASURY. A sum of £922 was stolen from the Treasury at Rabaul on the night of February 19. The thief has not yet been detected. This information was given by tho Australian Minister for Homo and Territories, Senator Pearcc, in tho Federal Senate recently, in answer to a question. Tho loss was discovered on the morning of February 20, and an official inquiry was held. As a result two officers of tlio Treasury were charged with negligence. One was fined, and tho other was reduced in status, but had appealed against the decision. Senator Pearce said that the Rabaul police were still seeking tho thief, and a reward of £IOO had been offered for information leading to his conviction.
