POLICE COURT NEWS.

A BORROWED OVERCOAT. MONEY TAKEN FROM POCKET. TERM OF PROBATION GIVEN. A request by Mr. Singer for suppression of the name of John Best, aged 26, who admitted theft of £lB, the property of Charles J. Metcalfe, on about Juno 4, was refused by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday. The police evidence was that accused, while in tho employ of a Taupaki farmer, borrowed the overcoat of a fellow-employee and came to town. Ho found the money in a pocket and spent it. Mr. Singer stated that this was accused's first offence. When ho came to the city he spent what money ho had in liquor. Suppression of his name was applied for. Mr. Hunt: I am not going to suppress his name. This man is nearly 30. Accused was admitted to probation for 12 months and an order for restitution at tho rate of £1 a week was made. Accused was also ordered to take out a prohibition order. NEW ARRIVAL CHARGED. Charged with being idle and disorderly William Forbes, aged 24, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Senior-Detective Hammond said accused had not boon in New Zealand long. Ho had been idling about the waterfront and railway station. Captain Da vies, of tho Salvation Army, said he had a position vacant for accused that morning. Mr. Hunt: Well, he could not very well come when he was in custody. The magistrate added that if accused did not work lie would be given three months' imprisonment. ALIBI RAISED AS DEFENCE. Two charges of wilful and obseeno exposure were denied by a man, aged 27. Mr. Osburne Lilly a'sked that in view of the very serious' nature of the charges accused's name should not be published. .An alibi could be established and it could' lit proved that the'charges were absolutely unfounded. Mr. Hunt: Do you hear that, Mr. Hammond. According to Mr. Lilly you havo arrested a man against whom you havo not the slightest grounds. Mr. Hammond: He has been identified ty two young women. The case was remanded and suppression of accused's name was ordered. REMANDED ON THEFT CHARGE. A man, aged 22, was remanded for a weeK on bail of £SO on a charge of theft of £6 5s ljd at Devonport on about April 8. His name was suppressed.
