GREAT NORTH ROAD.

Sir,—lt* would bo very welcome information to the residents of Point Chevalier and Avond&le to know, when the City Council intends to go on with widening the Great North Road and laying it down as a permanent roar! in concrete. This work was commenced about a year ago, but was suspended about four months later, and nothing has been done since. The cause of the suspension, 1 uncle*, stand, was that a certain property owner was then unwilling to part with the knd necessary to widen the road. That difficulty has now been overcome, so it would appear there is no excuse now for not going on with the work; Since the wet weather set in the road is getting in a very bad state with the increasing heavy traffic and certainly needs attention. Tho tramway manager, in his last report t<» : the council on bus services, recommcnijd putting on six of the smaller buses to Point Chevalier, .which will be much ajipredated by the people living there until such time as further tram extensions aro decided upon by the council. This pari of theiscity has certainly a prior claim for an extension to either Mount Eden or Mounit Albert. Before the buses are put on the road it would be. good economy to repair the road to minimise wear and tea* of the buses, which is aU important consideration. By report; the concrete paving of tho Great North Road beyond city boundary it progressing very, satisfactorily. The city ratepayers , sanctioned loan proposals last December, part of which included the widening and Saying down of this road in concrete; also double lines for tram service waß- provided to Point Chevalier HaiL Since then tho ; council has decided to stop tram extensions for the present. This • district has now a representative on .the council for the first time, and the ratepayers thaw are looking for. mora consideration in tho future than has been given them in tho past by the council.
