[BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NGARUAWAHZA. Friday. The great social event of the year, tho Racing Club's annual ball, was held last evening and proved a very enjoyable function, tho arrangements being excellently carried out. Messrs. Ayres, Paterson and Cavanagh were tho M.C.'s. Owing to tho floods blocking several roads the attendance was not so large as last year. A public meeting will bo held shortly to discuss a proposal by the Borough Council for the purchase of the lease of a block of land in 'Jesmond Street, a library reserve containing several shops. Tho council's idea is tljat the profit accruing from the rents might as well bo secured by the community as by private persons. If the citizens favour the proposal, it will be necessary to raise a loan of £2OOO to finance the purchase.
