CHURCH BELLS CLANG.
CONVICT AND A CHEQUE.
When tho present Borstal Institution at Portland was a convict prison the vicar of St. Peter's Church, which is near tho prison, received tho following letter from a convict:—
" I loathe the sound of your church bell, as I have got a musical ear and havo been accustomed to better things. When I get out, of this prison and mako my next big haul, tho first thing I am going to do is to send you a cheque to buy a peal of bells for your church." The vicar, the Rev. H. Penton, told the Diocesan Ringing Guild meeting at Dorchester recently that tho church had still only one bell. " Apparently," he said, " the big haul has not come off yet, for no cheque has come to hand, and I am. beginning to Jose hope.
