CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS* [ST -nSLBqiKPH. —OWN COJUUESPOKDEKt.] ' ] PAPAROA. Friday. The Otamatoa County Council considered the matter of classification of roads for heavy traffic and resolved on the following restrictions, Bnbjecfc to approval of' tho Government and in conformity with tho new regulations under the Motor Vehicles and Public Works Act : For tho winter months, April to Gctobcir inclusive, all routes throughout tho county to be classed fourth-clays roads {2l, tons). For the summer mcalhs, November to March iwtlusivo, tho mam highways to be classed tbird-class roads (4 tons), all other roads to itemain fourtil-class. Opportunity will bo extended for objections -by ratepayers*. ~ Application for Government grants approxwnating £17,000 has bsep niade to the Public Works Department by the council for inclusion in this year's Esthnates. This is apart, altogether from mam highways applications. Approximately £I2BO is being applied for from the Marine Department on account of whares. Included m the £17,000 are s>tfus for Slater's, Bridge. Pap&roa.. Macadam s Bridge and the Taipuha Bridge, Mareretu, the Pukehuia Bridge and the boundary bridge at Whakapirau, these bridges being among those- provided for in the bridge rate proposal recently carried by the ratepayers, The council proposes striking a small bridge rate next year. None will be required this yew. Tenders for county works were deals with as follows :—Ruawfti section, Dar-eaville-Maungatwolx) main highway, *J blinding with chips, Messrs. Thurston aud Copeland, £271; MaUkohe-Tokatoka .... ; Road, cutting tea-tree, 3 miles, Hone Tana, offer by the council of £3O to complete the job; Thomas Bridge, Brynderwyn Road, Mr, Donald Buckle, £92. In the matter of Donovan's Deviation, Dargaville-Maangaturoto main highway, the tender? wero referred to the chairman of No. 1 District Highways Board to be dealt with. In connection with the Dar-gaville-Maungaturoto main highway, a repairs contract was let to Mr. C. Parr at £255. Other contracts include quarrying and napping metal for the MatakcheTokatoka road and blinding metal on the Hukatere access road. tilling tenders are being invited for covering fascinea at Whitton's with pipeclay. Three of the trucks belonging to the cbuncil, purchased otiV of a special maciir inery loan several years ego, are being offered for sale, being too heavy in view of the recent classification M roads. Ino new road roller and scarifier is expocteu to arrive at Maungatnroto in a few days. Refunds have been applied for totalling £1562 6s 6d on Government grants and. claims for a further £IOOO are in preparation*
