Poynton, 8.M., in the Police Court yifeterday, when objection was inade by Mk C. 0. Butler to tho payment of a fee of £3 3s to counsel from the Crown solicitor's office. The case was one in which a man pleaded guilty to driving over a railway crossing 'while & train was approaching. Mr. Butler, repi'isenting tho defendant who was fined £1 and costs, said he notified the Crown solicitor's office a week ago that a plea of guilty woald be entered. It was hardly a case for allowing £3 3s costs. t • Mr. Hubble, who prosecuted, said the money was paid straight into the public account. "It you charge £3 3s and the Court allows only £1 Is, the tastpayer has; to find the rest," said Mr. Poynton. the ■ transgressor was the one who should pay the costs. Tho .State should not have to bear iho burden. Costs amounting to £3 3s were allowed.
