PAIR OF BOOTS IPAWNED. THREE MONTHS FOR THEFT. PURCHASES FROM STRANGERS. "It is wonderful the number of people Who get into trouble through buying things from strangers," said Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday, when Daniel McFarlahe, aged 40, was charged with stealing two pairs of boots, valued at £2, from some persons unknown. "The next timo you meet a man in the etreet who wants to sell you something you had bettor get his name and address, or, better still, his photograph," the magistrate added. Detoctivo Nalder said accused had gone into a pawnbroker's with the boots undor his arm and pawned the boots_ for 6s. iWhen ho returned later with another pair tho pawnbroker, becoming auspicious, rang dp the police. Accused wa3 at tho time under tho influence of liquor. He later explained he had bought the articles from •a man in the street. Tho magistrate said that several convictions for vagrancy had been recorded against accused. Accused: I have suffered for that, sir. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed. ** A BURDEN ON HIS WIFE." "He does very little work and hangs around hotels cadging for liquor," said Chief-Detective Cummings in referring to Alexander Patterson, aged 38. charged with theft of a pair of boots, valued at £1 10s, from Stone and Co. Four previous convictions for theft were registered against accused in less than 12 months, said tho magistrate. Patterson had recently pleaded for a chance on account of his wife and children, but, on the contrary, ho appeared to bo a burden on his wife. v Patterson was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. THEFT AT WHANGAREI. "If you don't make an effort to get "work when you. are released you will receive another term," said Mr. Poynion to John Eric Morran, aged 22, who was brought from Mount Eden, where he is serving threo months' imprisonment, to answer a charge of stealing 15s 6d at [Whangarei from Alfred James Means. Morran was convicted and ordered to eomo up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, full restitution to be made. i VALUELESS CHEQUE ISSUED. Restitution was ordered to bo made by Ray Bateup, aged 33, who was charged with obtaining £3 from George Rosa by means of a valueless cheque. Accused was already on probation, said Mr. Cummings, he having been boj fore the Court on June 19 on ten charges of false pretences. GIRL PLACED UNDER CONTROL. A girl, aged 15, was committed to the Borstal Institute for Females, the police stating she had been leading a looso life at Kohimarama. Sho had been in tho habit of frequenting bachs, where she stayed untii all hours. Her father said she had deceived him at home, having said she had been working overtimo in town, whereas she was spending her time with young men. Tho girl was concerned in a case heard during the week in which charges of unlawful carnal knowledge were made against four young men. DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR. A young man, Theodoro Lynch, was charged with disorderly behaviour while drunk in Customs Street. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said accused alighted from a car at the foot of Queen Street with some companions. was under the influence of liquor and wanted to fight, his actions attracting a largo crowd. A fine of £3 was imposed. | OBSTRUCTION OF CONSTABLE. Henry Field did not appear on a charge «f obstructing constable Collins.while arresting Lynch. The constable said Field came up to him while he was placing Lynch in a motor-car and laid his hands on his shoulders. The offence was not a very serious one. Accused was fined the amount of his tail, £2. ! OBSCENE LANGUAGE CHARGE. Dennis Dcvine, aged 50. who pleaded guilty to drunkenness and to using obscene language in Federal Street was fined £5 in default 7 days' imprisonment.
