THE TREK TO CANBERRA. FEDERAL OFFICIALS PREPARING. . P . \ Before the Australian Public Works committee recently Mr. J. G. MacLaren, secretaiy for the Home and Territories Department, gaye evidence on the proposal to erect at Canberra a solid temporary structure at a cost of £58,500, to provide accommodation for the National Library, which is at present stored in the basement in the Federal Parliament House, and to be used by the secretariat. Mr. MacLaren said it was proposed to divide the building equally between the library and offices, 14,000 sq. feet being required for the library. Under the secretariat scheme 160 officials would be required for the first two years, pending the permanent removal of staffs. On the basis of a modified permanent transfer the heads of departments bad submitted the number of officials required to transfer. The total was 990, exclusive of the Trade and Customs. Department, which had not furnished figures.
