ORAKEI MODEL SUBURB.

Promptly following acceptance of a design for Auckland's new suburb at Orakei comes the announcement by the Minister for Lands that' there will be no avoidable delay in subdividing the area and making sections available to intending homebuilders. This is welcome news. Conceding that there were difficulties, especially in meeting the claims of native owners before the whole block could be secured, there has already been a long enough wait for this valuable piece of urban development. Work is already in hand on the railway line which is to bring Orakei within easy reach of Queen Street. The provision of transport by a short and rapid route is not a matter of conjecture, it is definitely within sight. Therefore the necessity of holding out definite prospects to those people whose eyes, have turned toward the eastern waterfront has become all the greater. There is another project on foot to which the Minister refers. He speaks of the proposed" waterfront road as a proposition with details awaiting settlement. In a sense that describes the position, but it is evident, from the progress already made with it, that once the Government comes definitely into it —as there is every reason it should —the day of commencement will not be far away. The road will be an essential factor, making for quick success. A speedy and complete agreement among the parties and the assured prospect of work beginning without a day of avoidable delay is highly desirable. If Mr. McLeod does his best to expedite this business and pursues steadily the course he has indicated to complete the other preliminaries, it should not be long before a model Buburb, accommodating a large community of contented householders, gives Auckland reason to be grateful for his efforts.
