DETECTION OF POACHERS.
■ v. \ L.. V- I FISHING WITH EXPLOSIVES. AN APPEAL" TO MOTORISTS. An appeal to motorists to assist the Acclimatisation Society in securing observance of the game preservation laws was made tg the council of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening. It was pointed out in a letter from the society's secretary that while the great majority of motorists were careful to observe the laws in ".his respect, the convenience of the motofc-car was occasionally of great assistance to poachers in avoiding detection. The following instance was quoted "Recently a party of motorists in two cars camped on the Waimiha for two days. They had rods, and consequently were not suspected of illegal fishing. They left with a car-load of trout, which, they said, had been caught on a certain fly. Upon examination by a ranger of the river above and below their cariip, however, ample cvideucc "was found that explosives had been used." The effect of such action, the letter •ontihued, was that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of fish, both largo and small, were, killed by the explosion and by tho follui ion of tho water from the explosives, t was thus possible that years of work had been undone. Similarly, if game were shot out of season, or if the hen birds were shot at any season, it was only a. matter oE a short time, before all game birds would be exterminated in New Zealand. ' . . It was decided to assist the society in its endeavour to detect breaches of tho laws'. (
