MCKENNA DUTIES.
REIMPQSITION AT HOME. LONG DEBATE IN COMMONS. (Received 10.35 p.m.) Router. LONDON, Juno 10. ' After the rejection of a series of Liberal and Labour amendments in the course of an all-night f debate in the House of Commons the McKenna duties were adopted by 186 votes to 67. The McKenna duties were first imposed in Britain in 1915 on various imported manufactured articles. They were renewed from year to year. To avoid hardships to traders they were, on the last occasion, renewed by the late Labour Government until August 1, 1924, when they were allowed to expire. Their abandonment was warmly clebated in the House of Commons. The present "'Prime Minister, on May 12, moved an amendment to the Finance Bill to the effect that the removal of the McKenna duties would be inexpedient. This was defeated by 317 votes to 252, and the second reading of the bill was secured without a division on May 27. The bill was finally passed on July 23, and speedily went through the Lords. The articles on which o McKenna duties were imposed, and on which, presumably, they will now be reimposed, 1 were cinematograph films, clocks and motor-cars and motorcycles, and musical instruments.
