SMALLER COASTAL BOATS. DIFFICULTY OF EQUIPMENT. CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND. A conference, on the question of wireless installations on coastal steamers, between representatives of Auckland shipping interests, on the one hand, and. officers of the two departments of the Government, service concorned in the matter, on the other, was opened at the Government Buildings yestorday. Mr. G. C. Godfrey, secretary of the Marino Department, presided, and the officials associated with him were Captain Hooper, nautical adviser to the Government, and Mr. E. A. Shrimpton, chief tojograph engineer. There wore also present Captain, Hammond, manager, and Mr. G. Gow superintendent engineer of the Northern Steamship Company, Captain Henderson, president, and Mr. V. Ryder, secretary, of the Auckland Merchant Service Guild, and Mr. E. C. Gago, district telegraph engineer. . • Under the Shipping and Seamen Amendment Act of last session, which, as in the case of all other legislation on that subject, had to be rosorved by the Governor-Genera! for the Kings assent, since received, the Government has drafted regulations in regard to the use of wireless on coastal steamers, and circulated them for the consideration of the interests concerned. The Northern Steamship Company has taken exception to some of the requirements of these regulations, and it desired to discuss them 'with the Minister ■ for Marine. The Minister, however, preferred that the discussion should take place with a body of experts. Consequently he appointed the officials uamed as a committee to meet the representatives of the shipping company and report to him as to the reasonableness of the provisions proposed in the draft. . . It was under this order of reference that the present conference was opened. The proceedings are not open to the press.. The whole of yesterday was taken up with a discussion of various aspects of the matter. To-day the members of the committee will inspect some of tho Nor» thern Company's vessels in port, to see for themselves the difficulties as to equipment of which tho company complains.
