DAIRYING SEASON.
THE GISBORNE DISTRICT-; INCREASED OUTPUT FOR YEAR. [BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN COHn.ESPONDE.NT. ] GISBORNE. Tuesday. Tho butter-making figures for the past month show that there has been a considerable decrease in the output, and tho local factories have discontinued export* ing butter about a month earlier than usual. During the month of May the Kia Ora Dairy Company mado £0,0621b. of butter* as against 88,6661b. for the samo month last year. Tho output has shown a big drop for both .April and May, but, nevertheless,' tho season's output will be greater than that of last year. During tho summer months conditions were ideal for dairying, and it appeared as if the season would create an outstanding record. Up to the end of March the Kia Ora Company was confident that it would make an additional 100 tons for the season, but this has been reduced considerably owing to the dry weather during April and May. The increase in the output of the Kia Ora Company to date is 50 tons, but as there will be another drop at the end of this month, the increase for ihe season will probably be 30 to 40 tons. ' _ ■ From now onward the local factories will be making only sufficient butter to meet the requirements of the district. Speaking to-day on the subject of the dairy season, the chairman of directors of the Kia Ora Company, Mr. G. E. Moore, said that, had the season been as good throughout as it "was at the commencement, the company would have had a record season. As it was, they would be well ahead of their previous season's output. During the last three months the feed on the flats had dried off very rapidly, but since the recent rains there had been a surprising growth, and in many places where paddocks had been absolutely bare, there was now grass three or .four ■ inches in hoight. Dairy farmers had thought that they would be very short of feed this winter, but al-, though the rain had come rather Jate, it had arrived early enough to allow of a good growth. The butter "market in England had been weakening lately, and th'e company was holding a considerable quantity of its butter, with a view to receiving better prices.
