NEW CHIEF POST OFFICE.

PALMERSTON NORTH. EXPANSION OF THE DISTRICT. [BX TELEGHAPH. — OWN roaiIVSFONDENT. ) PALMERSTON NORTH. Tuesday. In the course of an address to-day, Mr. A. T. Markham, Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, stated that it had been decided to make the Palmerston North office a chief post office. Within the past few days, added Mr. Markman, the Postmaster-General had given the necessary authority. The district would extend from Manakau in tho South, to Greatford, Ruahine, Dannevirke and Pahiatua at other points on the outside boundaries of the district.. It. had been found necessary, too, to mako substantial additions to the Palmerston North post, office, at a cost of £12,000 to £15,000. The expenditure was warranted by the expansion of tho town. Tho additions to the building were estimated to meet the needs of the future for 15 or 20 years.
