SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.

DISEASE IN AMERICA. VACCINATION PRECAUTIONS. Reufer. NEW YORK, May 18. Smallpox, in a mild form, is prevalent throughout a large part of the United States. Thirty-four States report more than the usual number of cases. Public health officials, although they urge that there is no cause for alarm, are nevertheless doing everything possible to make vaccination general. The President, Mr. Calvin C'oolidge, set the example at Washington following which practically all the members of the Cabinet, Administration officials, and their staffs were also vaccinated. The Mayor of New York, Mr. John I-\ Hylan, was vaccinated at the request of the health commissioner, who recommended all members of the public to do likewise. New York City lias granted a special appropriation of 8000 dollars to fight the disease.

Six new cases were, recently reported in one day. The outbreak is believed to be most severe in Southern California, but 110 definite figures are available as the officials arc anxious to avoid causing undue alarm.
