THE GENERAL ELECTION.
CHRISTCH URCH NORTH. CANDIDATE FOR LABOUR. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCH URCH, Sunday. The election of the Rev. J. X. Archer to the Mayoralty of the city will necessarily mean some change in connection with the candidates already in the field for the Christchurch North seat at the next general election. The nominees to the Labour Representation Committee for the Christchurch North seat were Messrs. Archer and F. R. Cooke. In view of Mr. Archer's expressed intention that he will not contest a parliamentary seat while occupying the Mayoral chair, the Labour nominee for Christchurch North will in all probability be Mr. Cooke. Today the Mayor-elect reiterated his previously expressed opinion that no man should occupy the mayoral chair and a seat in Parliament at the same time, -and for that reason ho would not be a candidate. Mr. C. T. Aschman, who recently retired from the headmastership of the Normal School, is spoken of as the possible Reform candidate for Christchurch North. Mr. Aschman polled very well in the City Council elections this week securing ninth place.
