ORPHANS' CLUBS.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The opening gathering of the 34(h session of the Auckland Orphans' Cliib was held in the Scots Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance. The president, Mr. J. Drummond, j-pe-sided. A letter,' regretting his absentee, was read from the patron, the Gover/iorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, who expressed the hope that he would bo able to attend on a future .occasion. The Auckland Savage Club vxas represented by Dr. P. If. Buck (president), Messrs. J. If. Hutchison (ex-president) and ft. ,f. Lusher (secretary). A" enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental items was submitted. Fo.rty-one new members were elected. An enthusiastic reception was given to Auckland's MayqTrelect, Mr. G. Baildon, the knotty pw,blems confronting whom were naively referred to by the chairman. Congratulations were also extended to Mr. W. Wallace on his re-election to the Auckland Hospital Board, and to "Mr. J. B. Johnston, who, the chair.man posited out, represented new blood on the Auckland Harbour Board. The second session of the Birkenliead and Northcote Orphans' Club was opi ned on Saturday evening with a large attendance, in the -Masonic flail, Northcote. Tho president, Mr. A. M. Pickford, twelcorried the visitors, including represeritatives of the Auckland Savage Club ,and Otahuhu Orphans' Club. 'J'he Takapuna Orphans' Club lieluf its opening night last Thursday, There Hvas a good attendance of members. JThe chief orphan, Mr. L. Lewis, presided. A creditable programme was given by jthe local orchestra, of which Mr. White/ is conductor. Visitors and members "expressed pleasure at the progress made;,,.by so young a club.
